Magnificent Spectacle Lotus Pond

    Green lotus leaves are linked to each other resembling numerous layers of blue jades. They are freely spreading with multitudinous swaying branches. Siu Fun Kee's poetic lotus pond is free and unique. Endless landscape is with thousands of lotus contending for beauty among glowing mountains and graceful water. A spectacular sight with vast expanse of the sky has been constructed by Siu Fun Kee's leisure lotus pond.

    Allegedly, the earliest record of painting related to lotus may be the picture Ceremony by Lotus Lake by Liang Emperor Xiao Yi of the Northern and Southern Dynasties. There are many lotus painters among the ancient and modern Chinese as well as Western artists. Their brilliant great works are as many as stars in the sky. It is not easy to deliver any new surprise given that there are already many paintings depicting lotus pond in the past thousands of years. However, Fun Kee's works are different from the ancient palace painters' perfection with fine detailing. Her style is different from that of many masters such as Xu Wei and Ba Da from Ming Dynasty who experienced freehand brushwork, Zhang Daqian and Liu Haisu who employed strong and aggressive splashing from, Wu Guanzhong and Huang Yongyu who used blending of ink and color. It is even more different from the style of French impressionist who were intentionally focusing on light and shadow. Instead, her works are unique with a random and indulgent attitude. They also show a poetic mood, an ethereal image, and an elegant charm.

    There are too many advantages in Fun Kee's artistic career that ordinary people can't have. She comes from an artistic family with good talent since childhood. She lives in an open city and studies at a famous university. Her superiorities include excellent environment, good education, rich experience, and more importantly her determined to achieve character. Fun Kee's father, Siu Fai Wing, is an artist with profound influence in China and abroad. He is the first Chinese painter with an international asteroid named after him. He draws attention from the art community with his expertise on paintings, calligraphy, as well as sculpture. Siu Fai Wing was regarded highly in the art circle since he was young. He has close relationship with several generations of artists and his contacts are mostly famous masters. Also, he has an immense number of collection of paintings and calligraphy. Therefore, Fun Kee was deeply affected since her childhood and has been able to use the knowledge carefully through extensive observation. She has been able to accumulate a lot and develop good eyesight with scholar's style. As a result, her lotus pond is filled with unique temperament and diffused with a different kind of fragrance.

    Fun Kee favorites painting lotus ponds with her grand mind. According to Chinese culture, it has always been advocating seclusion and evading the world with pure, noble, and arrogant character. Lotus doesn't stain with sludge, symbolizing sanctity and fragrance. All these just fit the portrayal of literary spirit. Through the ages, when creating pictures of lotus, most painters focus on depicting the portion of flowers and leaves, while only a few focus on lotus pond. The picture composition is rather plain and quiet which is lack of excitement. However, Fun Kee's lotus pond is with a variety of levels and intricacies. It is flourishing, majestic, and energetic. She is able to focus on the whole without any repetition and demonstrate her high ability to manage the overall arrangement. Her lotus pond is always misty with smoke in spring, prosperous with green in summer, implicit but not exposed in fall, and warm with harmonious sunshine in winter. Looking at the contents of Fun Kee's lotus pond, there are all sorts of different scenes with vitality, including series of Sights of Lotus and Mountain, Scenery of Lotus in Mountain, Sunny and Cloudy in Four Seasons, Fine and Overcast in a Day, Clear Shadow under Daylight and Moonlight of Lotus Pond. In addition to the symbols of holiness, auspiciousness, love, as well as wealth, it is amazing that Fun Kee's lotus also show the far-reaching implication of rising prosperity.

Fun Kee has a lot of courage and boldness of vision when applying color with emotion. In ancient time, Chinese painting was called "Danqing". Painters used to advocate the "conformity to kind in applying colors" and paintings became a riot of colors. After the Song and Yuan Dynasties, painters upheld ink painting. They paid full attention to ink and took no account of color. Ink painting was the leading type and only one unique color of ink was used everywhere. Chinese painting has its own esoteric theory and strict formula with full confidence. There are always many limitations in the traditional concept of applying color. Therefore, it is not easy for Chinese painters to have a breakthrough in terms of coloring regardless of the creation of Chinese painting or oil painting. However, Fun Kee has her own unique style in the depiction of lotus pond. She breaks through the traditional barriers, to apply color with emotion, to paint in a free and unconstraint way. There are all sorts of colors such as green, orange, blush, violet, black, white, and indigo. The colors can be expressed in the tones of deep or light, rich or tint. On the paintings, green lotus, red lotus, pink lotus, yellow lotus, while lotus and black lotus are reflecting each other and appear to be extraordinary splendor. Her expression of many colors has never been seen before. The combination and application of colors are extremely unusual, exquisite, delicate, rich in cadence, and full of rhythmic beauty. It's like Li Bai's poetry said, "The beautiful color of the lotus is unparalleled but whom is this fragrance sent to", Fun Kee has undoubtedly presented a new transcendence in applying color.

    Fun Kee's paintings have a natural interest in terms of forgetting the original shape and getting another realm outside the object. Freehand spirit is the essence of Chinese art and contribution of wisdom. It has independent aesthetic value and lofty academic status in artistic aesthetics of the world. When creating lotus pond, Fun Kee focuses on the spirit while detaches from the outside appearance of the objects. This is no other then the inheritance of the freehand style. She basically transforms the ancient style into her new style. She always depicts lotus leaves and flower stalks by just a flourish of the pen. She really uses her pen to fully display the fun and freedom of freehand brushwork when giving vent to her feelings. The modeling is ever-changing and unique with varied content as well as all sorts of different poses. Although her style looks new in appearance and technique as well as avant-garde, it is in fact benefiting from the inspiration of Chinese painting's freehand spirit and it is inherited in the same vein as traditional Chinese culture. The spirit has been condensed between the likeliness and dissimilarity. It goes direct into people's heart with unconventional style and high-mindedness. As ancient poetry states, "Only green leaves and red buds of lotus match each other; all the rolling of leaves, the opening and closing of flowers are natural". Fun Kee's freehand lotus pond contains abundance of creative techniques and artistic languages. She paints with her heartfelt feelings and remarkable energy. It really let us appreciate the new and extraordinary presentation.

    Fun Kee succeeds to open up her field of vision and have the knowledge from both the East and the West. Impressionists in France have used the oriental concept of art for reference. In turn, Impressionists have profoundly influenced the contemporary Chinese oil painting community as well. Fun Kee has already made some achievements in Oriental culture and has also studied extensively in Western art. The Impressionist's creative techniques and the spirit of freehand brushwork are similar to each other and each has its strong points. It is not hard to see the shadow of the impressionism and Divisionism when looking at Fun Kee's freehand lotus pond. The cold and warm of color replace the light and shade. The paintings show a real momentum and brilliant charm with a large area of color, a large brushstroke effect, the ever-changing composition as well as ingenious decorative embellishment. In the foreground of the picture, the lotus leaves are stacked in layers, clumps of clusters, vivid, and swaying gracefully. In the distant view of the picture, the boundless scenes look dim, obscure and starry. Looking at Fun Kee's art works, there are concrete presentation, abstract refinement, impressional ambiguity, intangible imagery, and exalted rhythm. She has succeeded in creating magnificent lotus ponds with thousands of colors and various beautiful postures.

    Fun Kee is ambitious to be great, she obtains the blending feature of the East and the West, and the mutual benefit of knowledge and skill, with the intent to innovation. The excellent distinctive lotus ponds created by Fun Kee are really presenting a unique artistic appearance, demonstrating the elegance of the East, conveying the spirit of Chinese culture, which have gained wide praise from the art world and all social circles. With her good foundation, strong education background, unremitting persistence and lofty aspiration, I believe Fun Kee will create bigger miracles and bring us more surprises in the future!

逸象荷塘 蔚然奇观 


        田田翠盖,迭迭青璧,千枝摇曳,万朵纷披。萧芬琪的诗意荷塘率性随心,别具云烟!山光韫玉,水色藏珠,千芳竞秀,无际无涯。萧芬琪的逸象荷塘苍穹浩瀚,蔚然大观。

        据称,南北朝梁元帝萧绎的《芙蓉醮鼎图》,或是记录最早的画荷之作。古今中外画荷者大家辈出,多如繁星,佳构巨作,煌煌大观。要在此千百年的荷塘画作中出新出奇,谈何容易。然而,萧芬琪的作品,不同于古代宫廷画家工笔细描的严整富丽,不同于徐渭、八大写意泼墨的纵意老辣,不同于张大千、刘海粟恣意泼彩的豪放雄强,不同于吴冠中、黄永玉墨彩交融的洗练健秀,更迥异于法国印象派凝注光影的专意摹画,而是畅意放逸,别具情思,独显一份如诗意境,空灵意象,雅淡气韵。

        萧芬琪的从艺旅途,有太多常人难以企及的优势。出身艺术世家,自幼天分过人,身处开放都会,入读著名学府。优渥的环境,良好的教育,丰富的阅历,更重要的是她勉力而为,决意求成的性格。萧芬琪的父亲萧晖荣是海内外举足轻重影响深远的艺术家,首位国际小行星命名的中国画家,绘画、书法、雕塑齐头并进,艺坛瞩目。萧晖荣青年时代即受画坛器重,与数代艺术家感情笃深,萧家往来多为大家名宿。且其书画收藏,数以万计,名品丰殷,汗牛充栋。因此,萧芬琪自幼濡染其中,自然能博观约取,厚积薄发,练成一双好眼力,养就一身书卷气。因此,她的画荷,浇注着独特的气质、弥散着别样的清香。

        属意荷塘,胸襟宏大。传统中国文化,向来崇尚隐逸避世,清高自赏,孤傲自况。荷花不染污泥,圣洁幽芳,正好贴合文人精神写照。历代画荷,放眼荷塘者少,描摹局部花叶者多,画面构图,清清寡寡,素素淡淡,一派寂静。而萧芬琪之荷塘,层层迭迭,繁繁盛盛,波澜壮阔,活力四射。着眼整体而无一重复雷同,彰显极高布局经营能力。春荷含烟,夏荷翠茂,秋荷蕴藉,冬荷和煦。观其内容,荷山万象、山居荷风、四时阴晴、朝暮晦明、天光清影、荷塘月色。包罗万象,一派生机。在荷花圣洁、吉祥、情爱、富贵的象征之外,又平添一个勃兴繁盛的深远意蕴,令人叹服!

        以情赋彩、胆魄过人。国画古称丹青,主张“随类赋彩”,曾经是五彩斑斓。宋元以后,崇尚水墨主导画坛,重墨轻色,“运墨而五色俱”,水墨画以一种墨色独步天下。中国绘画有自己深奥的理论,谨严的程序,十足的自信。传统的用色理念,曾经限制了中国画家无论国画、油画上色彩语言的探索,色彩的突破向来十分不易。然而,萧芬琪的油画荷塘却能不落窠臼,突破藩篱,以情赋彩,随心所欲,无拘无束。翠绿、橙黄、绯红、紫蓝、黑白、黛青,或深或浅,或浓或淡,百媚千姿,应有尽有。翠荷、朱荷、粉荷、黄荷、白荷、墨荷,交相辉映,异彩纷呈。红飞翠舞,五彩缤纷。很多色彩的呈现见所未见,而色彩的组合、运用也极见精妙独特、巧夺天工,富于节奏感,充满韵律美。真如李白诗“秀色空绝世,馨香竞谁传”,无疑是在用色上的一种出新和超越!

        离形得似,意趣天成。写意精神是中国的艺术精髓,智慧贡献。在世界艺术美学上拥有独立的审美价值和崇高的学术地位。萧芬琪的荷塘作品舍形取神,超然象外,正是传承写意宗风,化古为新。她的荷叶、花柄往往一挥而就,一气呵成,漫笔遣兴中尽显大写意的无拘无束,酣畅淋漓。或正或偏、或倚或侧、或俯或仰,造型千变万化,千姿百态,自得天趣,独具韵致。看似形态新奇,技法时尚,风格前卫,其实还是得益中国绘画写意精神的熏陶灌注,与传统中国文化一脉相承。在似与不似、不似之似之间凝炼精神,直抒逸气,直达内心。“唯有绿荷红菡萏,卷舒开合任天真”。萧芬琪“动乎意,生乎情,举乎力,发乎文章,以成变化规模”的写意荷塘,丰满了手法,丰盈了语言,让我们领略到聪慧和胆识。

        放逸视野,兼具东西。法国的印象派曾经借鉴了东方的艺术理念,反过来,印象派又深刻影响了当代中国的油画界。萧芬琪于东方文化颇有建树,对西方艺术同样涉猎广泛,钻研殊深。印象派的创作技法与写意精神互有异同,各有所长。萧芬琪的写意荷塘不难看到印象派、点彩派的影子。色彩的冷暖取代了明暗,大面积色彩、大笔触效果,千变万化的平面图式,别出心裁的装饰点缀,让画面独显一份率真气势,灵动气韵。荷叶近处层层迭迭,团团簇簇,惟妙惟肖,远处隐隐约约,氤氤氲氲,繁星点点。这里有具象的呈现,抽象的提炼,印象的朦胧,意象的空蒙,逸象的律动,营造了一幅幅波澜壮阔、气象万千的荷塘图卷。
