I “Act Wildly” on the Canvas

 

It is more fun to do oil painting compared to Chinese painting. For Chinese painting, you cannot make too many modifications once you have the stroke. However, there is always more room for changes in oil painting. Although this cannot be considered as certain kind of advantage, it is a great convenience for me as the beginner of oil painting. When the paint is not yet dried out at the beginning of the process, the oil painter can always mix up the fresh new color with the old color to make any changes at will. There is no ideological pressure to worry about painting with wrong stroke. When the surface starts to dry out a little bit, the painter can use the pen to dig, poke, and wipe to generate different effects.

 

It is interesting to use painting knife as the tool even though I was not very accustomed to it at my first time. It is fun to keep pressing and scraping. When I draw a lotus with a painting knife, I really have a feeling like making a cake. Since my skin is sensitive to pigment, I have to put on gloves. I also have to put on my apron to avoid staining my clothes. With both gloves and apron in place, I really feel like becoming a chef. Without any doubt, my painting skills and cooking skills are not at the same level. I have loved eating and cooking since my childhood and I have got the good skills due to lot of practice. The oil painting is just the beginning of the game but the kind of exploration is still quite interesting. The whole process is from “having to look like” to “breakthrough”, and then requesting “not to look like”. At the end, some important strokes must be added to clean up and emphasize in between “looking like and not looking like”. At this moment, with the rush and confusion, I even think of the theory of Qi Baishi's freehand ink painting. Wonderful!

 

When drawing to the fifth day, the surface of the paint starts to appear at the state of being stalemated. The way to depict cannot be elegant anymore and the progress has been tied up. At this time, I can only indulge myself and intentionally let myself arbitrarily to “act wildly” on the canvas.  The wilder would be the better. It is indeed a wonderful experience for me because I never act that wild in the real life. It seems to me that I can feel the power released completely by the lotus after it fights off from the sludge. I feel like I can see the flowers dancing in the strong wind. I can vaguely smell a faint fresh fragrance which covers the pungent smell of turpentine taste.

 

Of course, I am not planning to compare with any painters because I don’t consider myself as a painter. I am only the one who likes to play with color, likes to manipulate the color as well as falls in love with a place where I can “act wildly” at will.

 我在画布上“撒野”


       画油画比画国画有趣的地方是,国画基本上是一笔就一笔,不可有太多的增减修改,而油画则有很大的改动空间。尽管这不能被视之为一种优点,但对于刚开始画油画的我,却是一种莫大的便利。在起初颜料还没有干的时候,大致上在画画的过程是可以把先后的颜色混合,随意幻变,不必担心下错了笔,没有思想压力。而当表面开始有点干了时,用笔挑、拨、擦,更可玩出不同的效果。

 

      用具上有趣的是画刀,第一次用画刀,不太习惯。但压着、刮着,蛮有趣的。当我用画刀画莲花时,真有制造蛋糕的感觉。加上皮肤对颜色有点敏感,我戴上手套,又穿上围裙以避免弄脏衣服,简直就成了一个厨师。无可否认,我的画艺与厨艺是不可同日而语的,我从小爱吃爱做饭,功多艺熟。而画油画可是刚开始的玩意,但那种摸索还是挺有意思的。整个过程,就是从“要似”,然后要“破开”而求“不似”,最后又要加一些重要笔触,收拾强调,使其在“似与不似之间”。此时此刻,在手忙脚乱之间,我竟然想起了齐白石画大写意水墨画的理论。妙哉!

 

当画到第五天时,就出现了颜料表层开始呈胶着的状态,用笔已潇洒不起来,似乎脚步被缠住了。此时,我只能放纵自己,故意让自己任意在画布上“撒野”,能有多泼辣就多泼辣。这对于现实生活中从不撒野的我,确实经历了一次奇妙的体会。我似乎感觉到莲花争脱了污泥彻底绽放的力量,好像看到了花儿在狂风中舞动,依稀闻到了一阵淡淡扑鼻清香,掩盖了刺鼻的松节油味道。

 

当然,我没有打算跟任何画家比较,因为我不是一个画家,我只是喜欢上了玩颜色,喜欢上了拨弄色彩,爱上了一个可以随意“撒野”的地方。
